Thriving Families – Online Tuition for Young Refugees and Asylum Seekers

We started developing Thriving Families in March 2020 and we launched the project in November 2020. Many of the refugee, asylum-seeking and migrant communities we support faced substantial barriers to supporting their children’s home learning during lockdown and school closures. Through the research we carried out we identified the main barriers that our clients faced around home learning. We have created Thriving Families as an urgent response to the worsening educational inequalities resulting from Covid-19, based on the recommendations from our research.

We are deeply concerned that the educational inequalities resulting from school closures will prevent young refugees and asylum seekers from being able to fulfil their potential. We are providing Year 7-11 pupils at schools in Leeds with IT equipment and linking them with volunteer tutors to deliver weekly one-to-one online tuition. Online tuition gives pupils from refugee backgrounds an opportunity to catch up and improve their academic outcomes.
